Un día llegará… :P

 

(De todas formas, es una lástima que la idea original no se materializase: conectores USB con hilos ópticos plásticos adicionales para la parte Light Peak. Hubiera sido lo más parecido a un conector universal)

¿Qué más te da? Suena muy bonito y muy guay, pero ¿qué más te da que el USB use fibra?

 

De hecho, la forma final que ha adoptado el TB tiene muy buena pinta, igual que Ethernet a 10 Gbps. El cable incluye un transceptor, lo que, aunque lo encarezca, te permite escoger entre cobre o fibra, y, además, en el caso de la fibra es fun-da-men-tal que el transceptor sea fácilmente reemplazable (caso de los cables TB) porque es un elemento fungible.

(Sí lei que los conectores de fibra óptica tenían algún tipo de problema de desgaste o lo que fuera, pero, viendo lo que planeaba Intel originalmente, me pregunto cómo pretendían solventar eso)

the USB promoter group announced that it's signed off on the final specifications for USB 3.1—a technological level-up that stands poised to take USB 3.0's 5 gigabits per second transfer rates and double it to 10Gbps. "SuperSpeed USB," indeed.

 

While you won't be able to tap into the full 10Gbps speeds unless you're using hardware built specifically with USB 3.1 in mind, the new specification will be backwards compatible with USB 3.0 and USB 2.0, meaning all your current USB cords and accessories will work just fine with USB 3.1-enabled devices.

Es lo que imagino... vaya tela, apenas empezamos a usar USB 3.0 y ya están con el 3.1 al doble <_<

 

Por lo visto los chips estarán para el 2014

Después de varias generaciones (1, 1.1, 2 y 3 si no he contado mal) ya era hora que conectar un cable USB a ciegas no fuera cuestión de un 50% de probabilidades de meterlo a la primera

Si simplifican tamaños (norml, mini y micro) en uno solo si sería un avance

Yo estoy hasta las narices de los conectores USB. Tengo docenas de chismes y cables, pero siempre me falta alguno en el peor momento.

 

Por ejemplo tengo una cámara de fotos que no puedo cargar, porque usa un conector diferente a todos los demás y he extraviado el suyo.

 

Entiendo que vayan mejorando y que se necesiten varios tamaños, pero ¿de verdad hacían falta tantas versiones? :angry:

 

 

PD: No me acuerdo dónde leí antes está noticia, pero decían que el conector reversible a lo Apple es un gran avance, porque los USB actuales tienen una cuarta dimensión: lo intentas conectar y no entra, le das la vuelta y no entra, lo vuelves a la posición inicial... y entonces entra :D

Por lo menos solo puede entrar de una manera, hay quien ha conseguido conectar el FW 400 al revés :ph34r:

En cuanto al USB, he simplificado, ya que hay conectores normal, mini y micro para tipo A y para tipo B... y además de esos hay algunos no estándar :ph34r:

 

Si el tipo C es único (y nadie se sale por la tangente) será un logro colosal (para un conector micro-mini) :D

NEWARK, CA (22 September 2014) – The Video Electronics Standards Association (VESA®), working in liaison with the USB 3.0 Promoter Group, today announced the publication of the DisplayPort Alternate Mode (“Alt Mode”) on USB Type-C Standard. Using the DisplayPort Alt Mode, a USB Type-C connector and cable can deliver full DisplayPort audio/video (A/V) performance, driving monitor resolutions of 4K and beyond, SuperSpeed USB (USB 3.1) data and up to 100 watts of power–over a single cable. The DisplayPort Alt Mode can also drive adaptors that support the huge installed base of existing DisplayPort, HDMI, DVI, and VGA displays.

 

VESA utilized the Alternate Mode functional extension of the USB Type-C specification in the development of this new Standard. The DisplayPort Alt Mode repurposes some or all of the four existing SuperSpeed USB lanes to deliver full DisplayPort performance, and uses other signaling available in the USB Type-C connector for DisplayPort’s AUX channel and HPD (Hot Plug Detection) function. This enables computers, tablets, smartphones, displays, and docking stations to implement the new USB Type-C connector at both ends while using the DisplayPort Standard over USB Type-C to transmit high-resolution A/V along with USB data and power.

 

Devices supporting DisplayPort Alt Mode on a USB Type-C connector can also connect to an existing DisplayPort device using a reversible USB Type-C to DisplayPort converter cable. Video source devices that support DisplayPort Alt Mode on a USB Type-C connector can use an appropriate adaptor to drive an HDMI, DVI or VGA display. All adaptors and converter cables will comply with all USB Type-C characteristics, including reversible plug orientation and cable direction.

 

“The USB Type-C specification was developed to provide consumers with a robust connector for everything from mobile devices to PCs, and when combined with SuperSpeed USB 10 Gbps and USB Power Delivery, it truly enables a single cable solution for the market,” said Jeff Ravencraft, USB-IF President and COO. “The USB-IF is also in the process of developing joint port identification guidelines. We’re working with VESA to ensure consumers can recognize when DisplayPort Alt Mode is supported on USB Type-C devices.”

 

Like USB, DisplayPort uses a packetized data structure and differential AC-Coupled signal “lanes” that carry high speed data with an embedded clock. This allows the same electrical circuits and cables to carry either SuperSpeed USB data, at up to 10 Gbps per lane, or DisplayPort, at up to 8.1 Gbps per lane, as defined in the new DisplayPort 1.3 Standard. Early implementations of DisplayPort Alt Mode USB Type-C devices will likely use existing DisplayPort 1.2a capabilities that support up to 5.4 Gbps per lane. Using 5.4 Gbps across all four high-speed lanes will support up to 4K (4096 x 2160) display resolutions at a 60Hz frame rate with up to 30-bit color.

 

By leveraging USB Type-C’s flexibility, the DisplayPort Alt Mode can choose to transmit on just one or two of the four available lanes, so that the other two lanes can be used for SuperSpeed USB data at the same time. In a docking station connection, for example, the use of two lanes for DisplayPort at 8.1 Gbps per lane would allow simultaneous transfer of SuperSpeed USB data (up to 10 Gbps in each direction) while also supporting a 4K UHD (3840 x 2160) DisplayPort monitor. The dock can also be configured with DisplayPort protocol converters to support HDMI, VGA and/or DVI monitors. When using all four lanes for DisplayPort Alt Mode, which could drive a monitor with up to 5K (5120 x 2880) resolution, USB 2.0 data can still be carried across the USB Type-C connection using separate pins dedicated for that function.

 

“DisplayPort has played a vital role in advancing display performance and connectivity for platforms that are increasingly integrated and compact,” said Craig Wiley, Senior Director of Marketing at Parade Technologies, VESA Board member, and VESA Marketing Task Group Chair. “In addition to the dedicated DisplayPort connector, the DisplayPort Standard has become an important ingredient in other wired interfaces, such as ThunderBolt™, DockPort™, MyDP™, and Embedded DisplayPort™. Google today launched an updated version of its Pixel Chromebook, which is equipped with USB-C, much like Apple's new Retina MacBook. With USB-C, the Chromebook's 12-hour battery can be fully recharged in approximately 90 minutes, and a 15 minute charge supplies two hours of power, according to Google.

De todas maneras, decía el MacBook porque por ahora es el único mac que lleva USB-C, aunque también hay tarjetas USB-C PCI-E

AsRock también tiene una tarjeta con conector USB-C (concretamente USB-A + USB-C): AsRock USB 3.1 / A+C

 

 

A PCIe x4 add on card that provides a Type-A USB 3.1 port plus another Type-C USB 3.1 port for delivering up to 10Gb/s data transfer rates. Compatible with motherboards that have PCIe x4/8/16 (@x2) slots.

Aunque el problema de ambas es que son solo para Windows <_< (en teoría), lo bueno que tienen es que sirven a partir de PCI-E 1.1 (estamos en la versión 4.0), al menos así lo indica AsRock, y ambas compatibles con PCI-E x4, x8 y x16 (que son el número de lineas PCI-E)

The wave of rogue USB-C products that poses risks to PCs and mobile devices hasn’t gone unnoticed, and the USB Implementers Forum has taken steps to eradicate the issue once and for all.

 

A new specification announced by the USB 3.0 Promoters Group, which is part of USB-IF, aims to eliminate rogue cables, ports and chargers. The USB Type-C Authentication protocol will verify and ensure a USB-C connection won’t fry a port or damage a device.

 

A host device like a smartphone or PC will first verify the authenticity of the cable, charger or power source before any data is transferred. If everything checks out, a connection will be established.

 

So if a smartphone or PC won’t charge from a USB port in a public place, it’s perhaps because there’s a non-compliant component.

 

The goal is to protect devices, said Brad Saunders, chairman of the USB Promoters Group.

 

There’s more to the authentication protocol, though. Policies can be established so only authorized USB-C products work with a host device. That’s useful for businesses, who want only specific thumb drives or other USB-C devices to work with computers as a data protection measure.

Suscribo x 100.000 eso. De "universal" nada de nada.

Celebro que se vayan a instalar los puertos y tomas con el nuevo tipo de USB, pero me parece que falla la nomenclatura. Eso de USB 3.1 creo que es un poco chorra:

Puesto que incluye varias novedades

1. hay USB2 tipo A, USB2 tipo B, USB 3 tipo A, USB 3 tipo B, USB mini, USB2 micro, USB3 micro..........(esto ya parece cachondeo), pero el nuevo tiene una forma notablemente distinta, reversible (ya era hora).

2. además, los nuevos parecen tener alto régimen de transmisión, unos 10 GB/sg, mucho más que los USB 3,

¿por qué no llamarlo lisa y llanamente USB 4?

El problema es que se ha convertido en dramático son los diferentes Voltajes y Amperajes, que con USB 2.0 no pasaba de que algo no funcionaba, pero ahora puede suponer "quemar" algún dispositivo:

Se podría usar un código de colores como en las fuentes de alimentación de ordenador: 5V rojo, 12V amarillo... el problema es que los valores de la tabla son máximos, después los Amperajes son de su padre y de su madre...

Se tendría que suponer que los mecanismos soportaran amperajes voltajes con un margen de tolerancia. Por ejemplo, que si necesita 5 v, enchufarle de 4 a 8 v fuera bien, si necesita 12, que tolerara entre 10 y 13...

Lo del código de colores es una buena idea.

Apple pretende acabar con la conexión mini-jack en los iPhone usando Lightning... e Intel decide hacer lo mismo con USB Tipo-C: Intel Proposes to Use USB Type-C Digital Audio Technology

 

 

USB Type-C has a number of chances to become the standard for data and charging connector for smartphones and tablets running either Android or Windows. However, in the long-term future, Intel wants USB-C to be even more universal (and therefore pervasive) than it is going to be, which is why at IDF Shenzhen part of one of the talks evolved around using Type-C for audio.

 

Audio receptacles on PCs and mobile equipment are virtually the last remaining analog interfaces of modern devices, requiring certain techniques to maintain a high audio quality and remove interference. Intel proposes to replace things like 3.5 mm mini-jack with USB Type-C which will help to add features to headsets and will simplify connections of multi-channel audio equipment to various gadgets. This is not the first time a company has proposed to replace analog audio on PCs and mobile devices, but so far, nobody has succeeded due to the ubiquity of 3.5mm. Since the industry may still not be ready to go all-digital, there seems to be a backup plan.

 

Various types of audio jacks to connect headphones to audio equipment have been around for decades. For example, the original 6.35 mm connector, which is still widely used by audio equipment, was invented in 1878. Meanwhile, two-conductor miniature 3.5 mm audio connector (which is the most widely used audio connector at present) has been around since 1960s. Headphone jacks have evolved; they have gained contacts to support microphones and even basic programmable capabilities to enable remote controls. However, fundamentally, the ability to listen to audio through a speaker has remained the same for over a hundred years: completely analog and barely any smart functionality. Today's smartphones are used for all sorts of different purposes and are connected to a variety of devices, which requires sophisticated interconnection technologies with high data-rates. At the same time, as phones and devices get thinner, or even to simplify some of the internal design, it gets harder to install multiple ports for various purposes. If there were to be a universal connector that does it all, including audio, Intel and some other players want USB Type-C to be that universal connector.

Se podría usar un código de colores como en las fuentes de alimentación de ordenador: 5V rojo, 12V amarillo... el problema es que los valores de la tabla son máximos, después los Amperajes son de su padre y de su madre...

Por cierto, los USB 3 azules también pueden ser de dos tipos:

Los azules oscuros son USB 3.0, y los azules claritos son USB 3.1. Se ve la diferencia en las fotos.

Aunque el código de colores amarillo y rojo solo es para los puertos, no para los cables (incluso el azul del USB 3.0 hay fabricantes que no lo usan en los cables)

 

 

No es el caso, pero no hay que confundir interfaz (USB 3) con conector (USB Tipo C, que algunos medios acortan como USB-C)

 

 

Al final habrá que usar medidores de potencia USB (USB power meter) para saber que narices de potencia está dando el puerto... otra cosa es el dichoso cable :ph34r:

SAN JOSE, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--HDMI Licensing, LLC today announced that it is releasing the HDMI Alternate Mode (“Alt Mode”) developed by the HDMI Founders for the USB Type-C™ Specification. This will allow HDMI-enabled source devices to utilize a USB Type-C connector to directly connect to HDMI-enabled displays, and deliver native HDMI signals over a simple cable without the need for cumbersome protocol and connector adapters or dongles.

 

This enables two of the most popular solutions for connectivity to come together—the small form factor, reversible, and multi-purpose USB Type-C connector being adopted by smartphones, tablets and PC products, and HDMI, which is the leading display interface with an installed base of billions of displays. Almost 290 million HDMI-enabled display devices are expected to ship in 2016, including projectors, monitors and 100 percent of flat panel TVs.

 

HDMI Alt Mode will support the full range of HDMI 1.4b features such as: resolutions up to 4K, Audio Return Channel (ARC), 3D, HDMI Ethernet Channel, and Consumer Electronic Control (CEC). The HDMI cable will utilize the USB Type-C connector on the source side and any HDMI connector on the display side. Unlike the other Alt Mode display technologies which require various adapters or dongles to connect to HDMI displays, HDMI Alt Mode enables an easy connection via a simple USB Type-C to HDMI cable.
